CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Antirrhinum majus, commonly known as Snapdragon, is an attractive and widely cultivated ornamental plant prized for its colorful and uniquely shaped flowers. The success of Snapdragon as an ornamental species largely depends on its growth and flowering characteristics, which can be significantly influenced by various environmental factors, including nutrient availability. Among the essential nutrients for plant growth, potassium (K) plays a crucial role in regulating numerous physiological processes, such as photosynthesis, enzyme activation, and osmotic balance.

Potassium is considered a macronutrient, required in relatively large quantities by plants, and its availability directly affects plant growth, overall health, and flower development. Adequate potassium supply contributes to improved water and nutrient uptake, increased resistance to environmental stresses, and enhanced photosynthesis, which ultimately leads to healthier and more productive plants.

The timing of nutrient application has been recognized as a crucial factor in optimizing plant growth and development. However, limited research has been conducted to explore the specific effects of the timing of potassium application on Antirrhinum. Understanding how the timing of potassium application influences Antirrhinum growth and flowering patterns could have significant implications for horticultural practices, allowing for more effective and targeted nutrient management strategies.

This study aims to investigate the effect of the timing of potassium application on Antirrhinum by evaluating its growth parameters, floral characteristics, and overall performance. By identifying the most favorable timing for potassium application, horticulturists and growers can tailor their fertilization practices to optimize Snapdragon growth, improve flower production, and enhance the ornamental value of this beloved plant species.

In this research, we hypothesize that the timing of potassium application will impact the vegetative and reproductive development of Antirrhinum, with variations observed in plant height, leaf area, stem diameter, flowering initiation, and flower production. Our findings will contribute to a deeper understanding of the nutrient requirements of Antirrhinum and provide valuable insights for the development of sustainable and efficient fertilization practices in ornamental plant cultivation.

To achieve these objectives, we conducted a controlled greenhouse experiment, employing a randomized complete block design, with multiple treatment groups receiving potassium application at different growth stages.
